Today, many teenagers have already put technology to good use. Here are two good examples.

? A new reader (閱讀器) for the blind

The two 14-year-old students, Meng Shuqi and Feng Boyao, are from Taiyuan. They invented a new kind of reader to help the blind read books. The new reader can turn words into raised dots (盲點) when connected to a computer.

As we know, the blind read by touching raised dots. However, there weren’t many books for the blind in the past, and it was difficult for them to get new information in time. As the old readers in the market were very expensive and difficult to use, the two students decided to invent the new reader which was easier to use. They hoped that the new reader could be widely used to help more blind people.

? A smart system for the old

A 16-year-old American boy Vetri Vel created a smart system. It is made up of a small computer and a camera. The system can catch the heat signals (熱感信號) of a fallen person and send messages for help at once.

After Vetri’s neighbor had fallen down alone at home, Vetri realized that falling down was a common problem for many old people. It may even lead to death. Vetri hopes that his invention can help more old people in time.

Jack is my good friend. A few months ago, I saw a guitar in his room. 51 . I asked him why the guitar was in his room. He told me that he would challenge (挑戰(zhàn)) something difficult before 18 years old, and playing the guitar in public was the first thing he wanted to try. 52 but now he is confident (有信心的) enough after his first successful show at school.

After watching Jack’s first show, I thought carefully about myself that night. 53 . That was because I was not good at writing. Jack’s story made me think of the saying: “Where there is a will, there is a way.” I couldn’t achieve my dream in a day, but I could start to do something easy. 54

From then on, I wrote every day to improve my writing skills so that I could publish (發(fā)表) articles in the school newspaper.

56 The ear is an important organ (器官). To make people know the importance of our ears, the govemment set up National Ear Care Day. It falls on March 3rd every year. How much do you know about the ear?

57 There are three parts in our ears — the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. We can see the outer ear clearly. It can collect sound around us. Then the sound goes through the middle ear to the inner ear and finally to our brain.

58 Our ears keep working all the time even when we are sleeping, but our brain just pays no attention to it. Sometimes we may wake up suddenly at midnight. That’s because our brain hears something, although we don’t know what it is.

59 Our ears also help us keep a balance. There are some organs that are full of liquid (液體) with small hairs around them in the inner car. The liquid and hairs send messages to our brain to make us keep a balance.

60 Our cars even have something to do with tasting food. We may have problems telling tastes if there is something wrong with our cars.

You see, cars can do more than we think, so take good care of our ears from now on.

I’m Lin Yue. In March, 2022, COVID-19 started suddenly in my city. It was so serious that the whole city was locked down. At the very beginning of the lockdown (行動限制), some old people, especially those living alone, had difficulty getting vegetables.

One day, in the community WeChat group, an old man said that he was short of vegetables so I had an idea of setting up a food bank in the community, and my neighbors were also ready to offer help.

To keep social distancing (社交距離), I used a large box as the food bank, and put it in the public area. Neighbors could give away and get some food there. The large box was quickly filled with vegetables, rice and snacks.

One evening, I saw a bag of vegetables with a note saying “These are fresh vegetables. Please take them home if you need.”

In the WeChat group, an old lady who got the vegetables said, “I was so moved by the good-will (善意), but I only took three tomatoes, because I wanted to leave the rest for those people really in need.”

There were many similar stories in my city during the lockdown. Although COVID-19 keeps us apart, we can get through the hard times as long as we pull together.

Learming to Manage Our Own Lives

These days, we Chinese teenagers often depend on our parents in our daily lives. we can’t deal with difficulties by ourselves. So it’s important for us to learn to manage our own lives.

I think our parents should believe in us and never do everything for us. Sometimes it’s OK to give us proper advice and they should allow us to make our own decisions. Also, I think parents should encourage us to face the problems bravely and try to solve them.

For me, I seldom did housework in the past, because I thought it is our parents’ work. This is a wrong opinion. We should learn to do housework like sweeping the floor and taking out the rubbish. I hardly cooked either. When my mother was on business, I realized I must learn to cook by myself. After that, I find that cooking is not as difficult as it seems.

In short, the earlier we manage our own lives, the better it is for our future.
