There is a traditional toy called taiping nijiaojiao. It is a clay toy and also a whistle (哨子) in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu. It has a history of over 1,000 years.

Taiping nijiaojiao is made of the mud from the local mountain. It takes more than ten steps to make the clay toy, and the key step is to knead (捏) it with your hands. You can knead the clay toy into anything, like animals and plants. The blowhole is the most difficult part to make, for the size of the blowhole makes a difference to the sound. I’m Lin Yue. In March, 2022, COVID-19 started suddenly in my city. It was so serious that the whole city was locked down. At the very beginning of the lockdown (行動限制), some old people, especially those living alone, had difficulty getting vegetables.

Learming to Manage Our Own Lives

These days, we Chinese teenagers often depend on our parents in our daily lives. we can’t deal with difficulties by ourselves. So it’s important for us to learn to manage our own lives.

I think our parents should believe in us and never do everything for us. Sometimes it’s OK to give us proper advice and they should allow us to make our own decisions. Also, I think parents should encourage us to face the problems bravely and try to solve them.

For me, I seldom did housework in the past, because I thought it is our parents’ work. This is a wrong opinion. We should learn to do housework like sweeping the floor and taking out the rubbish. I hardly cooked either. When my mother was on business, I realized I must learn to cook by myself. After that, I find that cooking is not as difficult as it seems.
