It can be annoying when you go somewhere with no Wi-Fi or mobile phone signal. How can you get online? The private spaceflight company SpaceX might have the solution ? its Starlink satellite network.

Satellites launched into space will be added to the network. The company hopes to put as many as 12,000 of these satellites into orbit (軌道) around Earth by 2024.

The goal of the network, which was first announced in January 2015, is to provide users

with high-speed space-based internet access (接入) from any point on Earth.

“We’re really talking about something which is, in the long term ( 從長遠(yuǎn)來看), like rebuilding the internet in space,” SpaceX founder Elon Musk said when announcing the project.

So how does it work? Satellite internet uses large spacecraft that orbit very far above Earth. These spacecraft receive information from base stations on Earth and then beam ( 發(fā) 送 ) it back down to users.

But these spacecraft are so far away that signals are slow and weak. Starlink solves this problem by using many small satellites that can communicate with each other and orbit closer to Earth, making signals stronger and faster.

It’s a big plan ? but also one that looks more possible with every launch. A town in Washington state recently used Starlink while helping local people rebuild after a wildfire. Richard Hall, an IT expert who helped with the rebuilding, said he was impressed ( 印象深刻) with the service.

“I have never set up any tactical (短程的) satellite equipment (設(shè)備) that has been as quick to set up and anywhere near as reliable (可靠的) [as Starlink],” Hall told CNBC.

      14. The Starlink satellite network .

      A. will hopefully be completed in two years

      B. launched its first satellite in 2015

      C. will eventually have 1,200 satellites at the most

      D. is being developed by a mobile phone company

      15. What is the aim of Starlink?

      A. To make space travel easier. B. To provide internet connection in space.

      C. To help with satellite launches. D. To send different types of satellites into space.

      16. How does Starlink increase its signal strength and speed?

      A. By building a second network in space.

      B. By building more base stations on Earth.

      C. By using small satellites that are closer to Earth.

      D. By using spacecraft that orbit the moon.

      17. What’s Hall’s opinion of Starlink?

      A. It should improve its service for small towns. B. It is effective and can be trusted.

      C. It will help prevent wildfires. D. It should be faster.

      C

The documentary Born in China was shot in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau ( 青藏高原) and shows animals’ lives during different seasons.

It not only brings to audiences the lives of animals that are rarely seen in the wild – giant pandas and Tibetan antelopes (藏羚羊), for example – but also shows traditional Chinese culture. The film mainly focuses on life and love within three animal families – giant pandas, golden monkeys and snow leopards.

A symbol of China, the giant panda is both black and white. Its body is thought to show yin and yang. The panda’s gentle nature ( 本 性 ) also shows how yin and yang, when perfectly balanced, lead to peace and harmony (和諧). This can be seen in the documentary when a giant panda mother guides her baby to gradually look for independence and explore the world.

Monkeys always have strong personalities. The best example might be the Monkey King, a character from the popular novel Journey to the West (《西游記》). On one hand he stands for

impatience. But on the other hand, he shows cleverness and energy. Born in China follows a 2- year-old golden monkey who feels like his life has been changed for the worse by his new baby sister. He quickly joins up with a group of other free-spirited monkeys, but finally returns to his family and understands the meaning of responsibility.

A mother snow leopard faces the challenge of raising her two children in a harsh (嚴(yán)酷的) environment. The leopards, known for their rapid attacks and quick footwork, have inspired a form of pictographic boxing (象形拳) in Shaolin martial arts (武術(shù)).

“Born in China is a means to show Chinese traditional culture,” director Lu told the Binhai Times newspaper. “From five-animal exercises to pictographic boxing, Chinese people have learned from wild animals since ancient times.

      18. What three animals does the film Born in China mainly focuses on life and love?

      A. giant pandas, golden monkeys and snow leopards

      B. giant pandas, golden monkeys and Tibetan antelopes

      C. giant pandas, snow leopards and Tibetan antelopes

      D. golden monkeys, snow leopards and Tibetan antelopes

      19. How is Born in China special?

      A. It shows audiences the lives of animals in the wild.

      B. It is considered the best nature film ever made.

      C. It is the first wildlife documentary ever made in China.

      D. It shows Chinese traditional culture through the lives of animals.

      20. What’s the symbol of China?

      A. golden monkeys B. giant pandas C. Tibetan antelopes D. snow leopards

      21. The golden monkey leaves home because .

      A. he can’t get along with the Monkey King

      B. his mother wants him to be more independent

      C. he feels that his little sister has changed his life for the worse

      D. he wants to learn about responsibility from other monkeys.

      22. What do we know about the snow leopards in the documentary?

      A. It shows the importance of exploring the world.

      B. It was inspired by the novel Journey to the West.

      C. It shows what people can learn from animals.

      D. It shows how animals’ lives have changed.

      D

      閱讀短文 D, 根據(jù)短文內(nèi)容, 從短文后面的選項(xiàng)中選出能填入空白處的最佳選項(xiàng)。選項(xiàng)中有一項(xiàng)是多余項(xiàng)。

There are so many expressions in American English that sound pleasant (令人愉快的) but are not. 23 When someone says they have to “face the music”, it does not mean they are going to a concert. “Facing the music” means to accept the punishment of an action.

24 For example, “I can’t face another night of camping! It’s cold and rainy.” Or “In life, you must face your fears.” Face used in this way is very common. Back to facing the music: Imagine a friend asks you to take care of her expensive sports car. She gives you the keys and says, “Thanks so much for watching my car while I’m away. But please, do not drive it. It is an extremely (極其) fast car.” 25 You want to show off to some friends. So, you drive it around town one night. As bad luck would have it, you lose control of the car and drive it into a stop sign. Bang!

When your friend returns you must tell her what you have done and “face the music”.

26 It could be losing her friendship or paying to repair her car – or both. Whatever the music is, you must face it.

To “take your medicine” means to accept the results from something bad you have done. And if someone says, “You made your bed. Now lie in it,” they mean you created a bad situation and now you have to experience the results!
